PPT Meeting – Monday January 11, 2016 in the media center STEM room

Please join the PPT this month to learn more about Project Lead the Way and InSciEdout.  James Kulzer and Kyle Casper will be presenting again this month.  James Kulzer is a master level teacher for Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and the building lead teacher on Launch the elementary PLTW program and teaches the middle school PLTW program.  Kyle Casper is a gold master teacher for InSciEdOut.

This month, James and Kyle will lead PLTW and InSciEdOut sample lessons.  They will also talk about the InSciEdOut zebra fish experience, the future of science at Lincoln and will answer questions from the group.  

We will also hear an update about the Special Projects process to disperse the auction proceeds, and other fun activities planned for the Lincoln community this year.  The Lincoln PPT is the parent, guardian and staff planning team at Lincoln, and all are automatically PPT members.  We will have a Spanish interpreter available for this meeting.

Happy New Year from Mr. Sonju!

I wish everyone a very Happy New Year filled with fantastic opportunities and wonderful times.

We are looking forward to many exciting things at Lincoln for 2016.

-          The completion of the locker painting project is looking spectacular.  Thank you to all of the students, parents, grandparents and staff that contributed their talents to making this fun project happen. 
Special thanks to Kimsue for heading up this project.  This idea came from an Uppers’ student and it was fun to watch a great idea come to action to improve our school! 
-          We are finalizing plans for a Lincoln Anniversary Event to celebrate the 40^th year.  Details will be coming out in the near future for this spring “homecoming” event.
-          Students are learning a great deal and showing their knowledge and skills in a variety of ways.  We welcome parents to continue coming in to Lincoln to see the many great things happening every day!

                1.     Uppers parents should check Skyward for missing assignments.  Now 
                 would be a great time to get those done and ready to turn in when school   
                 resumes.

2.     Study Island is available online for students.  This program is a great review of material that has been taught and an outstanding MCA test preparation tool.

3.     IXL math is another resource that your children should take advantage of over the break.  Like Study Island, the content is tied to outcomes that will be the MCA tests.

Current STEM news:

     For the third year in a row Lincoln has been involved in the Hour of Code. This is the first step to introduce children to computer science. It is designed to let students (and teachers) learn that computer science is fun, easy, and accessible at all ages. Want more information? Check out http://code.org  

     Students are learning about STEM after school hours at Lincoln, too. This group of RAP students were asked to design a zoo cage with limited resources to withstand the weight of an ‘out of control elephant’. It’s great to see what the imagination can bring to learning.

STEM information for the week:

Things are rolling right along at Lincoln this week.

Grade 4 has started the Project Lead the Way Collisions Unit. Students will be designing a car to safely transport an egg down a ramp.

Hopefully, all that they learn along the way will keep that egg mess-free!

Grade 6 has been designing Mousetrap cars in their STEM class.

We all enjoy watching these creative cars travel from the power of just one mousetrap down the middle of the hallway.

Not only are they looking for which car design travels the furthest but they will be calculating speed with the data they collect.

No RAP next week!

The RAP program will be off the following week, Nov. 23-27.

RAP resumes Monday, Nov. 30. and will run until Dec. 17^th.

Thank you for being so prompt with pickups this year. It is getting very dark and it allows us time to make sure everyone can get to the cars safely with supervision.

Also, as we head into the beginning of winter be aware that if school closes there will be no RAP and there are days where transportation will not run late buses due to weather concerns after school hours. I will make sure you are notified by Skyward Alert if this occurs and it will likely be announced on other media sources.

Sumdog.com is a fun place to learn, too. All students grades K-5 have already been entered into the system so far. We can enter more as needed.

STEM Super Heroes In School!

More proof that Lincoln is the Greatest School in the Universe:

• Model cars designed and programmed by 13/14 year old students.
• Creations designed and printed on our new 3D printers by 11/12 year old students.
• Water filters designed and created to clean water taken from Silver Lake enough for zebrafish embryos to survive by 9/10 year old students.
• Imagination gone wild using Green Screen technology by 8/9 year old students.
• Computer coding by 7/8 year old students.

It is amazing what can happen when you give students the ability to learn.

Healthy Eating

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s)

Healthy eating is important for children. Research states that children who eat three meals daily are higher achievers in school and have a lower rate of absenteeism. At Lincoln we work hard to ensure students receive a healthy snack and lunch each day to support their developing brains. But, the healthy eating should not stop when money is tight. We want to help.

Lincoln works with Channel One Food Shelf and Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester to provide food to Lincoln families.

If you are interested, any Lincoln child and family are eligible to take home food each Thursday. A variety of food is available, including peanut butter, juice, bread, crackers, and fruit. Confidentiality is important. Bags and backpacks that are provided to transport the food will be unmarked. We ask that any backpacks that are borrowed to transport food be brought back to the office on Monday to be filled for the following Thursday.

If you are interested in receiving food through Channel One, or have questions or concerns, please email Amy Krahn at AMKRAHN@rochester.k12.mn.us or call Lincoln at (507) 328-3550. Your child will be bringing home food beginning on Tuesday November 24.

Information regarding RAP

Just an FYI for students and families in the RAP program:

This week RAP yearlong calendars were sent home with the oldest/only students who attend RAP. Please ask your student for it if you have not yet received yours.

Next week, RAP will be on Monday and Wednesday only. There is no RAP on Tuesday, Nov. 17^th  or Thursday, Nov. 19^th  due to student/teacher conferences.

The RAP program will then be off the following week, Nov. 23-27.

RAP resumes Monday, Nov. 30. and will run until Dec. 17^th.

The end of the first Quarter is approaching (Thursday, November 12) and it is time to sit down with your uppers student and discuss any missing work.  We have been reminding them to get it done and turned in but some still have missing work.  How do I do this you may ask…Check Skyward for current status.   Students have access to Skyward, Google Classroom, Moodle, My.PLTW.Org to get copies of missing work or they can talk to their teacher…

Lincoln Auction

Thank you to everyone that donated, volunteered and attended our 2015 Lincoln Auction.  The auction was a HUGE success!  Exact numbers will be coming in the next few weeks as all final expenses come in.  Look for information about the Special Projects process in the coming months, and attend the meeting in the January/February timeframe to decide where any extra money raised will go.   

Please return any baskets etc. that you do not want.  We do have storage space to store these items. 

It’s not too early to think about Auction 2016!  We are always looking for volunteers, please contact this years auction chairs to volunteer, or with suggestions & ideas.

40 YEARS of the Best School in the Universe!

TOMORROW! AUCTION!

Doors open at 11:30am
Silent rooms begin closing at 12:30 and the last room closes at 1:35pm.
Heads or Tails at 1:40pm in the Gym.
Live auction excitement starts at 2:00pm in the Gym.
Child care available starting at 11:30, and kids activities are from 11.30-1.30.

Come hungry!
The Bake Sale will open at 11.30. Pie and Carrot Cake and numerous other goodies available.
Mr. Pizza South will have fresh pizza available 11.30-1.30 and The Lost Cajun will serve their homemade gumbo starting at 11.30. These restaurants are both owned by Lincoln Families, and both are donating proceeds TO LINCOLN. So enjoy great food, and support Lincoln in the process.

Volunteer Reminders:
1. Set up volunteers, meet in the gym right after school Friday
2. Bake sale items can be left in the office on Friday, or dropped off auction day after 9.00
3. Volunteers day of Auction: Please check in at volunteer registration upon arriving at the auction.

40^th Anniversary School Photo

Today at 1:30 all of the staff and students gathered outside in their new t-shirts donated by the PPT for a school picture.

 Last call on bake sale donations!!

Put your baking skills to work and help out our school. Donations can be dropped off in the staff lounge on Friday or Saturday morning in the bake sale room. No need to price but please label if it contains nuts, gluten free, etc.   Thank you!!!
