Mayo Spartan Boys Basketball Game - Saturday, January 19

Lincoln K-8 night  at 7:30pm for the Mayo Spartan Boys Basketball game vs Red Wing! Students that wear their Lincoln K-8 spirit wear shirts will get in free with a paid adult chaperone at the Mayo Boys’ Basketball game.

Come see Lincoln alumni Josh Collins and Jake McCabe.  Both of these gentlemen have been doing a lot helping Lincoln students in classrooms this year! Our Spanish teacher, Mr. Madsen is also the varsity coach who will be coaching the Spartans to another victory on Saturday.

Project Community Connect - 2019

Project Community Connect will be held Friday, Jan. 25, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at RCTC Field House. Sponsored by the Homeless Community Network of Olmsted County, everyone (including children) is invited to attend. Participants can learn more about local resources (MN sure Navigators, legal services, veteran services, employment assistance, housing, childcare) and access free services (free haircuts, free lunch, free HIV testing, free ID). Interpreters available. Free city bus to/from the event - just tell the driver that you are going to Project Community Connect. Lincoln Parent Generosity

Absolutely moved by the generosity of another Lincoln parent!  Bill Riess graciously paid off all of the outstanding lunch accounts for the entire school last week! Nearly $900 to help folks start fresh here in 2019. 

Former Students Returns

Zoe Masterpole studied microbiology at University of Nebraska Lincoln. She received minors in biochemistry and international agriculture. While she was there she worked for the USDA- agricultural research service doing research on stable flies.

Then she volunteered in the Peace Corps in Togo where she worked on agricultural development. She did a lot of reforestation and food security work. 

She is now working on a master’s degree in development practice (economic development). Zoe presented to our uppers science classes last week and described her work and how her studies at Lincoln made her aware of the myriad careers associated with STEM.

HyVee Receipts (keep those receipts coming in…look what you have done so far)

Thank you all for turning in your HyVee receipts!  It is fun to see that box filling up each week.  We have a total of the value of the receipts as of today….$108,838.13, which means that Lincoln is guaranteed at least $400.00. We still have until June 8 to collect as many more as we can – hopefully we will be over 200,000 by them.   

Please keep any receipts you get, because every receipts helps.  This is a very easy fundraiser that will be spent on your children.  Thanks again for all you have done – we are halfway to our goal (last year we managed to collect a total of $77,000 in receipts)!

Outdoor Classroom Learning Area Donation from SCHEELS!!!!

Scheels generously donated $10,000 to our Outdoor Classroom Project this morning at anassembly! Our goal is to build a truly amazing hands-on Outdoor Learning Area with art, nature, music, science and a gathering classroom area this summer!

This amazing gift helps us get even closer to our goal as we are about half way there with previous fundraising efforts.

Scheels also shared they are willing to further help in this effort in doing a matching donation for further support! Please let Mr. Sonju know if you have interest in helping support this exciting opportunity for our school community:

Lincoln Ski Club: Community Education

·        Who: 4-8 grade students

·        When: Friday nights January 4-February 8

·        Where: We leave right from the back parking lot of Lincoln after school (4pm) on a coach bus and ski at Welch Village until the mountain closes, returning to Lincoln by 10:00 pm.

Join Linnea Archer, Lincoln Uppers teacher, on the slopes of Welch Village. Whether you are a beginner or an expert skier, this social outing is super fun. Skiing can be a lifelong sport; the memories of our nights in the chalet and runs down hills with friends last forever.

Due to a very successful auction enough monies were raised to support the PPT budget as well as fund $25,000 worth of Special Projects!!!!

What are Special Projects?
* Special Projects can be any project or item that will benefit the school. Special Projects can be submitted by parents, grandparents, teachers or students of Lincoln.
* Special Projects are paid for by money that is raised from the annual Lincoln Auction after the PPT budget has been funded.
* Special projects funded in the past include: Support of Media Center and Computer Lab Re-Visioning, Green Screen paint, the "Big Toy" playground equipment, STEM technology, Lincoln information sign, popcorn popper and 3D Laser Printer just to name a few.

This is your opportunity to spend the money that you helped raise!  If you have an idea of something you'd like to see at Lincoln, please fill out an application here!  You have until February 21st to turn in your application.  And then join us for a very unique opportunity to vote for the projects that mean the most for you at our consensus meeting on Tuesday, March 5, 2019!

Lincoln LEGO Robotics Team Victory!

Our Uppers LEGO Robotics team brought home three first place trophies last weekend, and will be advancing to the regional tournament in January. Two of the trophies will be in the office. 

Students from Lincoln that participate are Jackson Brandt, Hayden Mathern, Ian Kisiel, Martin Salib, Logan Bakken, Landon Thompson-Jewell, and Rahul Kollu (prior student).

Mel Dickie Day at Lincoln

Mr. Mel Dickie celebrated his 98th birthday with a school-wide assembly of his family, friends and the school that loves him! The assembly at Lincoln on Tuesday was to thank one of the most positive substitute teachers in the universe!

The Lincoln Lost and Found Bins are overflowing with lost items! Once the bins get this full, we donate the clothes to SAVERS.  

The deadline is THIS Friday, December 21st, to claim any of your missing clothes; otherwise, they will be donated to SAVERS for other kids to wear.

And that’s a wrap! It was a RECORD-SETTING YEAR (by a lot!!) and we couldn’t have done it without you! The Classroom Baskets raised $6,352 and Cash for A Cause during the Live Auction raised ELEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS in mere minutes! Not typos! It was an awe-inspiring year that will create countless opportunities for our students and staff!

If you are wondering where all this money goes – keep an eye out for updates on Special Projects in early 2019. Students, staff and parents are welcomed to suggest items/programs that they’d like to see at Lincoln K-8 by submitting a proposal at that time. All proposals are voted on at the Special Projects Meeting – it’s a fantastic way to have a direct impact on your child’s educational experience! Stay tuned for more information on those dates.

The Auction Committee would like to thank the many volunteers that made this day such a success. Our team grew considerably this year and we would love to add anyone else interested! The bigger the crew of volunteers, the more successful our auctions will be! If you are interested in helping out for the 2019 Auction please email Jen Groettum (jen.groettum@gmail.com) to get more information. We will be holding a wrap up meeting this month that will also begin our prep for next year’s event!

Locked in at Lincoln

Parents, enjoy a night out while your child is "Locked In at Lincoln." Students will take part in six different stations, including gym time, Maker's Space creations and other fun activities.  A light snack will be included.  This event will be limited to the first 120 Lincoln K-5 students.  All activities will be led by Lincoln staff.

Cost $20 per child or $50 maximum per family.

HyVee Receipts Update

Last year we were the Top School in the contest. Our total received back from HyVee was $305.81, and we submitted nearly $77,000.00 in receipts!  We can do even better.  

Bring in your receipts when you attend the auction.  The box will be in the foyer.  Anyone can contribute: your family, relatives, and neighbors. The more receipts we receive the more money for Lincoln!

We cannot wait to see everyone this Saturday at the annual Lincoln K-8 School Auction!! Bring your kids, extended family, neighbors, coworkers and more! The event is FREE to attend and open to the public! FREE childcare is also provided!

But first - we still NEED some volunteers! If you haven't signed up yet, please do so as soon as possible. We need these time slots filled to ensure a smoothly run event! All positions are very simple and short time frames - please help with this!

Bake Sale items can be brought in this week! You can start bringing items in on Wednesday. Our amazing Marketplace volunteers are able to price them for you. If they are gluten and/or nut free please label them so our Lincoln K-8 families with specific dietary needs can have in on the fun!

Keep an eye out for more bonus emails this week with updates and info on amazing items to bid on!

URGENT! All Lincoln Parents! Your voices are needed!

Yesterday, an email from Rochester Public Schools with the subject, "Facilities Task Force Video Update" was sent to RPS families. In that note, there is a link to a video delivered by Superintendent Muñoz explaining some brainstorming ideas the facilities task force has explored to address school capacity, diversity, and walking zones. At the 1:40 mark, Superintendent Muñoz explains one idea being explored is "making Lincoln a K-5 building." Here's a link:

In the same video, Muñoz emphasizes these are brainstorming ideas only. Decisions must be approved by the school board, and the preliminary discussion with the school board will occur on Tuesday, October 16. The public is welcome to attend a Citizen Voice Meeting at the Edison Board Room (615 7th Street SW) on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 5:30 PM. You may also live stream the meeting on YouTube (@ISD535).

As Lincoln parents and friends, many of you may have an opinion to share with the task force or school board. At this stage in the process, I'll offer these options which you may choose to pursue:

1. Attend the Lincoln PPT meeting on Monday, October 15th at 7:00 in the school library. More information and organization efforts may be shared there.

2. Attend the Citizen Voice Meeting at the Edison Board Room (615 7th Street SW) on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 5:30 PM. Share your concern in person!

3. Contact RPS board members directly. Contact information (including email addresses) can be found here: http://www.rochester.k12.mn.us/departments/school_board/elected_school_board_members

4. Share awareness and concern with other Lincoln families. Spread the word!

Thanks for your attention to this community discussion. With enough awareness and voice of concern, I'm confident Lincoln will remain the K-8 choice school we know and love today.
