Lincoln Auction Volunteer sign-up

Lincoln media center needs your help!

Fun and fast-paced volunteer opportunity available at the Greatest School Library in the Universe!  

The media center is seeking a volunteer to help with our Lynx reading program on Friday mornings from 9-930 a.m.  Students in kindergarten through 2nd grade visit the library every morning to return Lynx books and check out new ones.  Assistance is needed with sorting and checking-in books, reviewing student reading sheets, and punching stamp cards.  It's a quick 30 minutes and a great way to get to know students, library staff, and other volunteers. Wanting to donate to the auction, but aren’t sure what to donate? You have lots of options!

Lincoln K-8 Backpack Program

Lincoln K-8 School is teaming up with Channel One Food Bank and Zumbro Lutheran Church to offer a supply of child-friendly, nonperishable food to families free of charge.  Food backpacks are distributed discreetly once per week on Thursdays.  If you feel your child/children could benefit from this program, please contact Jenny Chonis, School Social Worker at 328-3554 or jechonis@rochester.k12.mn.us to sign up.

October 27 – Lincoln Auction 2018-  this makes all of the Unique Projects listed below possible

First Lego League (FLL) and FLL Jr.

2018-19 Season

FLL is an exciting, fun and intellectually challenging activity centered around Lego Robotics. The activity is intended for 4-8th graders. Teams will form just after the start of school in the fall. Teams need 2-4 coaching parents and 4-6 students. Teams meet 2-3 times weekly until the Expo meet, typically in December. Last season, BOTH Lincoln teams advanced to Regionals!

FLL Jr is for 1st-3rd grade students. Teams build a model and poster and present their work at the Expo, similar to a science fair. Teams need at least 2 coaches and 2-6 students. Focus is on teamwork, learning and fun!

$500.00 grant from the Rotary Clubs of Rochester

Thank you to the Rotary Clubs of Rochester for their support to enhance our coding lessons at Lincoln.  The Library Media Program was awarded a $500 grant from the Rotary Clubs of Rochester for the purchase of a class kit of Bee Bot coding robots and mats.  We are very grateful for their support and for PPT for helping to fund this project.  The growth of students’ computational thinking has been amazing.  Thank you!  Jenny Bruenger, Library Media Specialist

As we are all preparing to say goodbye to another fantastic school year, the auction committee is busy planning for the fall! Mark your calendars, the 2018 Lincoln Auction will be held on Saturday, October 27^th!

The auction committee is looking for help!

We need assistance with requesting and/or gathering donations from local businesses over the summer months. If you have connections to a local business, are comfortable asking for donations, OR have a little bit of free time to pick up donations across town - we really need your help!

We also are in need of a family, or a couple of families, willing to help with the take down of the auction immediately after the event. This volunteer position will communicate with the teachers and staff, and assist with putting furniture back into place, to ensure that classrooms are put back together and ready for the next school day.

The Honey Bee Project

The Honey bee Project is funded by the Rochester Public School and PPT.   The goal of the project is to educated staff and students about honey bees and their contribution to the world.  This was our first spring setting up a hive and working with bees.  We have a team of teachers that have taken classes and have helped with hive inspections.  We purchased a flow hive that will allow us to observe the bees and easily collect honey.   We have purchased a portable hive so that next fall we can bring a frame of bees to the classrooms when we talk about the hive and what bees do.  If you would like to see the Lincoln hive it is located about three blocks from Lincoln on the Boys Scout Property along highway 14.   There is a cage around it, but if you would like to watch the bees you can through the fence.   Joey Lindsey, a former Lincoln student has been contracted to design and create a camera system that runs off solar power and will upload images /video from the hive sometime this summer.  Once he has it working, we will send you the link… "The Bee Cam"

Over the summer we will begin the process of designing classroom lesson on bees for teachers to use with their classes.This is unique to Lincoln

Amplify Science Project

Amplify Science is a new science curriculum for K-5 that will supplement what we are doing with Project Lead the Way andInSciEd Out.  This new curriculum is funded by PPT and Special Projects and will add an inquiry hands on science experience at each grade level.  Teacher are meeting in June to learn about the curriculum and plan for its implementation.  This is unique to Lincoln.

The Drone Project

The Drone project is a new engineering experience for K - 8 students that begins the exploration of drones. This project is funded by Century Linc and PPT.  In this project, students will learn about drones which are unmanned aircraft, vehicle or ships that can navigate and perform complex tasks autonomously.  Drones are primarily grouped based on their propulsion – UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, UGV(Unmanned Ground Vehicle) or AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle).  Student will learn about the forces involved in flight and movement as well as Newton’s Laws of Motion. Then they will design, build, and test an experimental model glider and drones to find out how air and other forces affect its movement. In addition, they will apply a design process to a variety of problems such as delivering aid to an area where supplies must be and dropped to the ground from an aircraft or delivered on the ground.  

This project will be worked on this summer and will be integrated into our Amplify/Project Lead the Way/InSciOut.  This is unique to Lincoln

The Garden Project

We have a greenhouse, storage shed and six raised bed gardens.  The students have planted the gardens and now all that remains is weeding and watering.  Next week on June 11 Redeemer Luthern Church’s “Pay it Forward” will be sending people over to Lincoln to remove the rocks in the front of the school and replace them with new plants (Funded by PPT), new mulch (District Provided) and compost (District provided).  This project may take two days to complete and if you feel the need to get a little dirty and help make the front of the school more  attractive, please stop by and for an hour or two.  Many hands make the work go faster.  This kind of involvement is unique to LIncoln

Ellen Hunt Scholarship Selection Committee - PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Each year, Lincoln awards 2 scholarships to high school seniors who are alumni of Lincoln Choice School through the Ellen Hunt Scholarship.  Ms. Hunt was a former office manager for Lincoln for many years until her retirement and this scholarship has been established in her name.  We are looking for volunteers to participate in the selection committee to pick the winners of the scholarship.  You will be able to review the applications of all the applicants and see what remarkable achievements former Lincoln students have accomplished in their high school years. The time requirement is very minimal, but you must be able to attend the selection meeting that will be held on Wednesday, May 9th at 7:00 pm at Panera South.  If you are interested in participating in this important and rewarding activity, please contact Mandy Verdick at acverdick@gmail.com or (507)421-6475 by May 4th.

Honey Bee Project

You have heard by now that Lincoln received an innovation grant from the Rochester Public Schools to explore having a bee hive on our property so that students can learn about pollinators, bees and honey production.  The hive we proposed is from Australia and different that the hives you usually see around here.  It is called a flow hive ( www.flowhive.com  With this hive we do not have to take it apart to get the honey, just turn a key and it flows out.  The following have been accomplished:

1.     A honey bee group has been formed at Lincoln with teachers attending classes on beekeeping and we have joined the Southeastern Minnesota Bee Keepers Association.

2.     We have two bee keepers that are providing information and guidance  - Chris Williams Lincoln parent and bee keeper and Andrew Pruett who is a bee keeper and runs the bees at Quarry Hill

3.     The hive has arrived and has been assembled.  It will be in the foyer for a couple of weeks until the bees arrive and then it will go outside

4.     There will be a temporary fence around the hive to keep PE equipment away from it.  Students will not be able to get close to the hive due to the snow fence and eventually a permanent fence.

5.     The hive will be located on the far southeast corner of the playground 10 feet from the fence bordering hwy 14 and 10 feet from the fence on the east side of the playground.

6.     For the month of April the bees will be fed in the hive because there are not many flowers out.  Once the flowers bloom the food source will be remove and the bees will travel about 5 miles from the hive to find flowers.

7.     Difference between bees and wasps and hornets

Bees are fuzzy pollen collectors that almost always die shortly after stinging people (because the stinger becomes embedded in the skin, which prevents multiple stings). Bees don't die each time they sting, though; the primary purpose of the stinger is to sting other bees, which doesn't result in the loss of the stinger. Honey bees are not aggressive unless provoked.

Wasps are members of the family Vespidae, which includes yellow jackets and hornets. Wasps generally have two pairs of wings and are definitely not fuzzy. Only the females have stingers, but they can sting people repeatedly. They can be extremely aggressive

Why attend this event?   Events like these raise money to support new or help continue or expand programs that Lincoln currently provides to students. Lincoln has three new projects this year..

Drones in the Classroom - In this project, students will learn about drones which are unmanned aircraft, vehicle or ship that can navigate and perform complex tasks autonomously.  Drones are primarily grouped based on their propulsion – UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, UGV(Unmanned Ground Vehicle) or AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle).  Student will learn about the forces involved in flight and movement as well as Newton’s Laws of Motion. Then they will design, build, and test an experimental model glider and drones to find out how air and other forces affect its movement. In addition, they will apply a design process to a variety of problems such as delivering aid to an area where supplies must be and dropped to the ground from an aircraft or delivered on the ground.  There are two areas that actively engage students in STEM and they are robotics and drones.  Our proposal is to link coding to drones and robots so that students can see the real world application and future careers that would be available in these two areas. 

Seeds of Science - Seeds of Science / Roots of Reading is a collaborative effort of the Lawrence Hall of Science (FOSS), the University of California at Berkley and Delta Education. Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading is a program that integrates inquiry science with content rich-rich literacy instruction.  Updating to a new science curriculum is very expensive for a district so we would like to take the lead and start to purchase a science/literacy approach to science in grades two to five.  This would be the beginning of a transformation that will take a few years to implement and will eliminate most of our old  FOSS(Full Option Science System) kits and replace it with Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading.   Our other two programs(Project Lead the Way and InSciEd Out(Zebrafish)  give students inquiry science, literacy skill and this new curriculum will meld with these two programs.

Honey Bee - A Flow Hive is about more than just harvesting honey in a gentle way—it’s about creating community, educating people about the importance of bees, and empowering beekeepers both old and new to make a positive change to help protect these important little creatures.  Bees are tiny environmental champions! They are responsible for the pollination of 30 percent of the world's crops and up to 90 percent of our wild plants.This is a wonderful opportunity for our school to help students understand the job of pollinators in our world.  There are many books on bees and classroom lesson that are available for teacher in grades K -8.  A lot of curriculum we have access to is aligned to Next Generation Science Standards which we use in Project Lead the Way and InSciEd Out (zebrafish) lessons.

       1. Collect Box Tops, Bonus Box Tops, and Milk Moola caps and bag tops.

2. Place in Ziploc bag or envelope, with student’s name and teacher’s name written on the outside. (Yes, they can all be in the same bag and no, they do not need to be counted.)

3. Place in classroom canister or school collection bin in main entry.

Lincoln Memory Book (20 days left to order one)

The Lincoln Memory is under a new company this year.  The book will be larger than last year with more pages.  Students have begun the design process and we online ordering activated.  Students also received an order form.  Do not forget to order your memory book for your student.

DON'T FORGET! The March Madness Reading Challenge is going on!

This week marks the end of the first week for our March Madness Reading Challenge for grades 3^rd-5^th.  Rules and information on the March Madness Reading Challenge are attached.  In addition, you will find the first week’s Reading Log attached if your child prefers to write out their minutes read on paper. Please remember to help submit your student’s hours before the deadline every Thursday by 10:00 PM on the following dates:

Week #1 – March 15

Week #2 – March 22

Week #3 – March 29

Week #4 – April 5

Week #5 – April 9 (Monday after Spring Break)
