Book Fair and Game Night – Requested Needs

There will be a box for Gallon Plastic Bags for the Summer Reading Program at both Family Game Night and the Spring Book Fair. It would be great if you are coming to the book fair to drop off a few boxes of plastic zip lock gallon bags.

The HyVee receipt box will also be at these events, if you have HyVee receipts to turn in. A great idea would be to bring the HyVee receipts in a Gallon zip lock bag and turn them both in!

Lincoln Summer Reading Program

We are excited to offer our students a reading incentive program this summer!!

K-5 students will have the opportunity to choose books to bring home for the summer to help them complete 25 hours of reading or more. If 60% of K-5 students return their reading log, ALL K-5 students will receive a Tootsie Pop! If 80% or more students turn in their reading log ALL K-5 students will earn a tootsie pop and an ice cream treat! Students who return their reading log will also have their name entered into a raffle for the chance to win a prize!

Uppers students will have the opportunity to complete a book review on Flipgrid. If 70% of Uppers complete their book review, ALL uppers will have the opportunity to go to Slatterly Park for a grill-out lunch! Students who complete the book review will also have their name entered into a raffle for the chance to win a prize!

Spring Planting at Lincoln

We have six raised bed gardens at Lincoln that are planted and maintained by parents, staff and students at Lincoln.  This year we will be adding a Bee Pollen Mix of wild flowers garden and a strawberry patch.  The seeds will be distributed by our 2nd graders with their inventions for sowing seeds. This is an extension activity of our new Amplify Science curriculum.

Before we sow seeds and plant we need to till the gardens.  If you have a tiller and would like to help tilling the gardens the last week in April, we would really appreciate it! We can also rent a tiller, but will need a truck and a parent willing to till the six raised bed gardens, the pollinator garden and the strawberry patch. Please consider helping the staff and students with this project.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Lincoln Ellen Hunt Memorial Scholarship Selection Committee

Each year, Lincoln awards a scholarship to high school seniors who are alumni of Lincoln Choice School through the Ellen Hunt Memorial Scholarship.  Mrs. Hunt was the former office manager for Lincoln for 28 years until her retirement, and this scholarship has been established in her name. Mrs. Hunt passed away in 2018. In her obituary, she was described as “a kind and compassionate lady with an upbeat and positive attitude,” certainly valued attributes of our wonderful staff at Lincoln Choice School today.

We are looking for volunteers to participate in the selection committee to pick the winners of the scholarship.  You will be able to review the applications of all the applicants, and see what remarkable achievements former Lincoln students have accomplished in their high school years. The time requirement is minimal, but you must be able to attend the selection meeting that will be held on Monday, May 6th at 7:00 pm at Panera South.

If you are interested in participating in this important and rewarding activity, please contact Mandy Verdick at acverdick@gmail.com or (507)421-6475 by May 3rd.

The Box Tops and Milk Moola programs provide important revenue for Lincoln, which is used to purchase supplies for zebrafish, PLTW (Project Lead the Way), and Maker Space! Because the Milk Moola program has ended, we really need to maximize our participation in the Box Tops program to raise as much money as we can for Lincoln!

Take Note…
Lincoln students are encouraged to turn in their Box Tops throughout the year, either in their classroom collection bag or in the white bin in the main entry. The final deadline for Box Tops is May 9, 2019.

K-5 Competition!
The entire grade (K-5) with the most Box Tops and Milk Moola turned in by May 9 will win a popcorn or popsicle party! Here are the results after the March 21 collection deadline. The 2nd Graders are in the lead!

Be a Tutor

Be More for Lincoln Students – Tutor Reading or Math
Lincoln K-8 is looking for one Part-Time reading and one Part-Time math tutor for the 2019-2020 school year. In Minnesota, 1 in 3 third graders struggles to read at grade level and less than 60% of eighth graders are proficient in math. You can make a difference by giving your time and talent to help students at Lincoln build their skills and confidence!

Tutors work with students in grades K-3 in Reading and 4-8 in math during school hours throughout the school year. No matter if you’re a recent grad, career changer, stay-at-home parent or retiree, you can make a great tutor. No experience? No problem. Tutors receive great training, so they are well equipped to help students grow.

Part-Time tutors commit to serving 18 hours a week throughout the school year. Opportunities begin in August 2019.

Perks as a Tutor
·        Learn reading or math strategies to apply with your own children/grandchildren
·        Build your skills, network, and resume
·        Receive a paid stipend every two weeks
·        Earn up to $4,200 for college tuition or student loans. Tutors 55 and older may gift the award to their child, grandchild, stepchild or foster child.
·        Free health insurance and child care assistance for those who qualify

If you are ready to be the a change maker for kids at Lincoln, visit ReadingAndMath.net. Have a question? Questions can be sent to join@servetogrow.org or call 866.859.2825.
