Additionally, Sign-up Genius is showing that we are “full” for set-up, when actually we would love to have more volunteers.  Drop in between 4 & 6 and we will find a job for you.

We need your help supporting the classroom baskets.  Each room creates a basket with a theme which is auctioned off at the Lincoln Auction on Saturday, October 24.  Your support of these baskets is paramount to their success.  Please find your child’s classroom, do a little shopping this weekend and send in your contribution.  If every parents supplies one item to their child’s classroom basket, it will greatly help the auction.    The baskets will be “Poofed” (making the baskets look Fantastic) on Friday, October 23 and put on display Friday night.

Upcoming Lincoln Events

We are off and running to a great school year! Here are a few reminders of some upcoming important Lincoln events: 

Friday October 8th marks our first All Pro Dad’s event! You still have time to RSVP and we would love to see you here! Please let Amy know if you can make it. Email her at: amkrahn@rochester.k12.mn.us or call the office at 328-3550.

Saturday October 24th- Lincoln Auction! Mark your calendars and plan to attend. It is shaping up to be an amazing event, and we would love to see all our families join us for the day! 

Uppers’ Conferences: October 20 and 22nd from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. The conferences will be open style, first come first serve. All staff will be in the gym. 

K-5 Conference Nights are November 17th and 19th. As a reminder, you need to log into your Family Access account and sign up on-line for you conference. If you are having trouble with Family Access, please contact the school office.

     In order to get the public informed about the Lincoln Auction we have attached the “Auction Flyer”  Please print it out and put on your refrigerator and then hand it to your friends, neighbors and relatives.  Take a couple when you run errands and post on any community bulletin boards… ie grocery stores, drug stores, and especially at work if it is allowed.

October Is Here!

October will be an amazing month for Lincoln K-8!!!!!!!!

The Lincoln Auction is such an incredible event to bring our community together as it takes everyone’s efforts to make it as successful as possible.

I’m greatly looking forward to seeing everyone there at the auction on Oct 24^th.

It’s never too late to make a difference by getting involved.

STEM snippet of the week

It is only the first month of school, yet there is learning everywhere at Lincoln!

*Kindergarten students were talking with a scientist from Mayo Clinic Research lab via Skype. They learned all about his job and were able to virtually visit the fish habitat where 20,000 fish live.

*Fifth graders were exploring the world of bubbles. Some of the bubbles were large enough to fit a person inside!

The auction is fast approaching, please send your classroom basket contributions in ASAP.  The stage is also being transformed into our poofing area, so any other donations can now be sent and placed on the stage. Donation receipts for your tax records will be there and in the Lincoln office.

We are also looking for experiences to auction off in our Diamond Experience Room.  Last year Lincoln families were creative and shared a number of cool things including:

The New Playground is Taking Shape!

The new Lincoln Playground is almost done being built.  The cement and rubber will be poured next week and our kids will be ready to play by the end of the week!!

Did you know- The Lincoln school colors are in the playground design with green, red and blue representing the high school colors our students will eventually excel with in their future schooling.

The new playground will have 5 swings, a couple of wobble balls, slide and climbing areas!

A huge thank you to the following families for making the playground happen through their generous donations!

Lincoln Auction 2015!!!

Yesterday three students rang my doorbell during the evening asking me to purchase a discount card, magazine subscription and a coupon book for local businesses. This reminded me of why we have the Lincoln Auction. It was many years ago that our students were selling Humanities T-Shirts, plastic designs for windows, wrapping paper and magazine subscriptions. Most parents hated having their children going door to door selling and ended up just purchasing the items themselves. A group of parents thought there was a better way to fund the unique things we do at Lincoln and the auction was born. In the beginning it was a small auction that eventually grew and grew to meet the constantly changing needs of the students and staff. It was always a group of parents that took on the auction and got people to perform the myriad of tasks involved. It takes a lot of people giving up their precious time to make this happen. If every parent helped just a little or a lot - a couple of hours a week or just a couple of days the tasks would be easier. We have to raise money –every school does - but the parents do the fund raising not the students which makes us unique. Please consider volunteering by clicking the Signup button above. It takes a community to make this happen. Finally, encourage your friends, neighbors, and relatives to attend the auction.

ALL-PRO DADS!

All-Pro Dads is coming soon! We are gearing up for another great year of All-Pro Dads set to start on Friday, Oct 9th. We will be in the Gym at 8:00am with Dads, Grandpas, Father figures along with the students.

Perkins will again be sponsoring these events and donating muffins and juice.

School Flu Shots

Preventing disease and keeping our children healthy is a priority for all of us.   One of the best ways to protect our children’s health is by vaccinating them against known illnesses.  Influenza is a serious disease that can spread quickly among children, especially in schools, yet most of us tend to think it is a disease that only affects our older populations.  Not true!  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children typically have the highest attack rates during community outbreaks of the flu and children can spread the illness very quickly to their friends, neighbors and family members.  Protecting our children from influenza protects all of us.  The CDC now recommends that everyone 6 months and older get the flu vaccine every year, as soon as it is available.

Schools can play an important role in helping to keep our children healthy and in stopping the spread of the flu.  That’s  why Lincoln K-8  has partnered with a team of nurses from Olmsted Medical Center, Mayo Clinic and Olmsted County Public Health to offer the flu vaccine (both the shot and nasal spray) to students this fall. 

Lincoln K-8’s school located influenza clinic will be on October 5^th, 2016 in the afternoon, in the school Media Center.  Registration is required and can be completed through our registration link that can be found at http://www.semnic.org/schoolfluclinics.aspx. This is a fast, easy and convenient way to keep our children, our school and our community healthy throughout the year.  Paper registration forms are also available in the main office.  We strongly encourage you to take advantage of this important opportunity.  All forms of registration are due 2 business days prior to the clinic.

Lynx Reading Volunteers Needed!

Janis is looking for a few volunteers willing to to come in one day a week from 8:45-9:30am to help the Lynx readers with the incentive program.  Volunteers will stamp student cards, write their name on a paw print when they have a full sheet, and help with prizes, etc.  This is a great opportunity if you already drive your child to school in the morning and can stay an extra 45 minutes once a week.

Janis is hoping to find 3 regular volunteers (Monday, Thursday, and Friday) as well as a few subs who would be willing to come in when regular volunteers are unavailable.

You can also team up with another parent to share a day if you would rather only come in twice a month.

Lincoln parent Cathy Nathan, representing the Alliance for Strong Rochester Public Schools, will also join us to give an update on the important school district referendum scheduled for a vote on November 3.

Also, don't forget to make your classroom fundraiser donations, if you have not already done so.  Suggested donation is $20/child.  This fundraiser helps defray the costs of basic classroom supplies such as Kleenex, wipes, etc.  Make checks out to Lincoln PPT.  You can bring your donation to the PPT meeting, drop a check in the office, or the PPT will be accepting checks at the K-5 parent orientation on Sept. 24.

Due to a change in district policy Lincoln teachers are no longer able to ask parents/guardians to assist with defraying the cost of various necessary classroom supplies. Therefore, the Lincoln PPT has taken over the responsibility to collect donations and raise funds to cover these costs. We need your help!

Please consider making a voluntary donation of $20.00 per child to the Lincoln PPT to help cover the costs of these classroom supplies. Cash or checks are accepted. Road Construction - Wednesday, May 27

Note if you are attending the Talent Show and Project Family tomorrow. The city will be paving 11th Street tomorrow (5-27-15). Work should start sometime after 9:30am. Their work should only take 3 hours - they should be done by 2:00pm. This will accommodate our use of the back lot entrance before and after school. As always - mid day pickups would have to be done out of Door 1. Parking will not be available on 11th Street or in the school parking lot at all tomorrow.

Playground Donations Needed

We are getting closer and closer to reaching our goal of getting a new playground equipment on the north end of the building. This is the old "Small toy" that needs to be replaced. This new playground toy would be a new and improved area with tile and a fun playground renovating a much need area for kids.
Sue Lindsey (Lincoln Parent) and Ron and Linda Fess (Lincoln Grandparents) are making sizable donations to the cause. If others would like to join in on the effort it would be greatly appreciated so we can add more components to the playground. Big or small we will take them all :)

Project Family Scheduled for May 27 - Volunteers Needed to Lead Mini Sessions

Project Family is scheduled for May 27 from about 1:00-3:20.

Project Family is a school-wide elective day started by student government to build school community. Students are put into small groups with 5-6 students from a variety of grades in the group. This group travels together to do fun activities that support their multiple intelligences. All staff and many parents teach 20 to 40 minute classes on a variety of topics. Some previous sessions have been: geocaching, rugby, butterfly magnets, crepe making, banking, first aid, Bananagrams, yoga, fly fishing, chalk drawings, community service, i-movies, bead making, etc.

Linnea Archer is looking for volunteers to lead mini sessions on a topic of your choice. Please consider leading a session. We would love to have your expertise and enthusiasm. Linnea is also looking for a parent to take pictures of the afternoon. Please contact Linnea to volunteer. Talent Show News

Talent show auditions are May 4, 5, and 6. Sign-ups for these will be at the Student Government Bulletin Board the last two weeks of April. Acts should be no longer than 2 minutes but shorter acts are appreciated.
The Talent Show will be May 27 from 9:30-11:30 in the gymnasium.

Adult Volunteers Needed to Participate in Lincoln InSciEd Out Health Study

Students are learning how nutrition and physical activity can affect health through the InSciEd Out program. InSciEd Out is a partnership with Mayo Clinic, University of Minnesota, and Rochester Public Schools.
We are looking for 6 adults, 2 per classroom, who would be willing to allow 4th grade students to direct their nutrition and physical activities. The participants will look to set nutrition and fitness goals. The 4th graders would be guided with the support of a dietitian, and a personal trainer to help them design healthy nutrition and physical activity plans for those who participate.

Help Needed with Mulching Butterfly Garden - April 27

Help Needed! We are having 8 yards of mulch delivered on Friday, April 24 and would like some help on Monday April 27 to spread it around the butterfly garden and the raised beds. If you could help on Monday morning we would really appreciate it. Starting about 9:30. If you have a wheelbarrow and could bring it in the morning that would make our work a lot easier. Mr. Sonju Honored With Outstanding Educator Award

At a school assembly this morning, Mr. Sonju was surprised with the 2015 WEM Outstanding Educator Award for Ethics in Education, presented by the WEM Foundation and Synergy and Leadership Exchange.
The Ethics in Education Award recognizes educators who exemplify ethical behavior for the teaching profession and promote ethical practices and development for their students through classroom or school activities, policies or curriculum.
Mr. Sonju was awarded a certificate, a crystal apple and will receive a $15,000 gift at the awards brunch later this Spring. Congratulations to Mr. Sonju!

Lincoln Ellen Hunt Alumni Scholarship - Two parent volunteers needed for committee

The Lincoln Ellen Hunt Alumni Scholarship chairs are looking for two parent volunteers to participate as a member of the scholarship selection committee. This is a one time volunteer commitment where members of the committee participate in reviewing scholarship applications, meet for a single evening to dialogue and select a recipient. Members of the committee are given the applications to review prior and followed by the selection meeting on May 5th (typically lasting for 1-2 hours). No experience needed, however selected members need to be available on May 5th .

Spring Cleaning? We want your books!

We are collecting gently used books. During the week of April 6-10^th, please send any gently used books to school that you are willing to donate. Books can be sent to your child’s classroom where they will be collected, labeled and sorted. These generously donated books will be used for our annual Lincoln end-of-year book swap. This swap allows children to choose several books to take home and read over the summer.   Thanks in advance for supporting such a fun event for our students.

Rochester Afterschool Program Ends March 26

A reminder that RAP (after school program) will be coming to an end on Thursday, March 26th. Thank you to all the students who helped by working hard and being helpful.
Thank you to all the staff who stayed to work with kids to make connections and provide extra boosts for learning.
And a huge thank you to parents who helped in communicating with staff and being timely in pick up for such a large group of students :)

Rocktown Tour - March 26

Our Uppers’ students are ready to rock!
They have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming Rocktown Tour Concert on March 26th. Students have been working on their performance and getting the 50 blue ribbons in Study Island needed to earn time away from school. Plenty of time to get the blue ribbons if students have not reached at least 50 yet!

Uppers’ will be showing off their musical/theatrical/presenting talents to over 1,000 people that day at four different venues.

Special Projects Funded For This Year

The special projects consensus meeting was held on Wednesday, February 25th. Participants spent several hours discussing the various proposals, working through a three hour long process to ultimately create the funding budget below. Participants were impressed by the quality and diversity of the proposals that were submitted. They wanted to fund them all!
