STUDENTS - Apply to attend the 10th International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics - Applications due TUESDAY
InSciEd Out invites Lincoln students grades 4-8 to apply to attend the 10th International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics in Madison, Wisconsin - June 22-23.
InSciEd Out will be sponsoring 16 students to attend this conferences. InSciEd Out will be paying for all expenses - lodging, food, conference registration, poster preparation fees, and will be providing transportation and adult chaperones. Students from Lincoln K-8, Kellogg and Franklin and the Century STEM Society have been invited to apply. Students selected will be required to create a poster for display at the meeting.
Students must apply to attend the meeting. The application is due NEXT TUESDAY, MARCH 20, to Dr. Chris Pierret at pierret.christopher@mayo.edu. The application should be on one page, and should include the following information:
1. Student name, current grade, school
2. Abstract - In 200 words or less - tell us about your current work in science or science education.
3. Essay - In 200 words or less, describe how you have been personally affected by InSciEd Out’s efforts to improve science education.

Rochester Public Schools Want Your Input at "World Cafes" and Core Planning Team
As the Rochester Public Schools begins strategic planning, the first important step in the process is engaging the community in a conversation about our future. The venue for this conversation will be a World Café at four different locations and times over the course of two days. We invite parents, students and community members to commit two hours on either March 14 or 15 to join in this conversation. The World Café is an opportunity to discover what we care about, to imagine the future and to create a commitment to our school community. We encourage everyone to participate. We need many voices to create one mission for our District.

Parent Volunteers Needed for InSciEd Out Classroom Activity - March 27 and 28
The 4/5s will be working on a Water Treatment Module in late March. Parent/family volunteers are needed to help build the water filtration systems used in the module in the classrooms. Volunteers are needed on:
- Tuesday, March 27 in Mickey's room in the afternoon and
- Wednesday, March 28 in Mrs. O's room and Beth's room in the morning.
Minnesota Comprehensive Assessements (MCAs) - 2012 Schedule
We are getting excited about the upcoming MCA tests for all students in grades three through eight.

Changes in SCRIP

Instructor: Carol Lucido is an elementary teacher with experience in grades 1, 4, and 6. Carol Lucido currently works in the Office of Curriculum and Instruction for Rochester Public Schools with elementary curriculum where she has done extensive training in the area of math. She also is an adjunct teacher for Augsburg College where she teachers a Math Methods course to students studying to become educators.Previously she has taught first, fourth, and sixth grade in the Rochester Schools.
The 1 hour workshop will provide parents with information on the following questions:
How can I better understand the Everyday Math curriculum?
How can I support my student in learning math?
What resources are available to help?
The presentation will also provide at least 3 games/activities to take home that day!

Rocktown Tour - March 12-13
This year's edition of the Rocktown Tour will take place on March 12 and 13. 108 of Lincoln's Uppers qualified to participate in the Rocktown Tour by earning 50 blue ribbons on Study Island. These students will be visiting Gibbs, Gage, Franklin and Hoover elementary schools on March 13 to share encouraging messages and songs about rockin' the MCA tests.
Parents/families are invited to attend the Rocktown Tour assembly at Lincoln on March 12 at 2:15.

Special Projects Consensus Meeting - February 13
Come to the Special Project Consensus Meeting on Monday, February 13th starting at 6pm in the Lincoln Media Center. We will review the submitted project applications and put together a spending proposal for the $13,500. Submitted projects include Uppers books for the Media center, Netbooks, iPads, Literacy Library, Videocams and Media Center furniture! The consensus meeting is open to any Lincoln parent or guardian and Lincoln staff. Anti-Bullying
The “Get Smart” Mindset Efficacy team is offering a FREE one (1) hour meeting on Friday, February 17, 2012, from 12 noon – 1 pm. The topic of discussion will focus on “Anti-Bullying.” In this session, special guest Vangie Castro will help us explore bullying, who bullies, who gets bullied, and why they do it. In addition, how you can help your child create a safe school environment and bully free zone.

Memory Books
A dedicated team of students has started working on the Memory Book. Our book is done completely online. Each page is created with uploaded images and pictures of students imported from Lifetouch. Students also us a sales tracking program in which they record the student’s name, homeroom, money sent in so that we get an accurate count and make sure all students that ordered a book – get a book. In order to keep our costs down we only order the books we need and therefore rarely have extras. Please consider ordering a book. They are $12.50 and the money can be sent in the memory book order form envelope sent home last week or in a plain envelope. Please include students name,, homeroom, number of books wanted and we will take care of the rest.

Pennies for Patients and Pennies for Pets
Student Government and Lincoln’s Save the Animals group are sponsoring a penny challenge January 30-February 10. Half of the proceeds will go to Pennies for Patients which helps children with leukemia. The other half goes to the ASPCA. A group of students have been meeting at lunch for 10 weeks to decide the best way to save animals and decided on this penny challenge.
January 30-February 10 jars for money will be located in the office. Each classroom will have ajar designated. Pennies and dollar bills in each jar will count positively towards each classroom total. Silver coins will count negatively towards the classroom total. The classroom with the greatest positive total as of February 10 will win a pizza and popcorn party.
Jeans for Teens
January 26-February 10 bring in your old jeans. A group of Lincoln kids will donate them to help homeless teens. The school that donates the most jeans wins $500 from Aeropostale. There will be a box outside the office to collect jeans.
